Tuesday, 8th February 2011 Irish favourite Dunguib is responding well to treatment following a poor blood test last week. The Philip Fenton-trained bay gelding has returned to training and is expected to get back racing within the month with a return expected at Gowran Park. The eight-year-old caught the horse betting public's imagination following a series of good performances with eight wins, one second place and one third place in his eleven runs. Top-drawer performances for Dunguib include a Weatherbys Champion Bumper win at Cheltenham in 2009 (see video below) and a solid third place finish behind Menorah in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the 2010 renewal. Fenton was disappointed that the horse was unable to compete in the BHP Insurances Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown recently but is now targeting the Red Mills hurdle on 12th February. The well-liked horse holds an entry for the Stan James Champion Hurdle and his comeback run will be watched very closely for signs of a full return to health. Fenton was quoted as saying "He's grand, he's fine. Hopefully we'll get him there (the Red Mills) in good order and the idea after that at the moment is to go to Cheltenham." A note of caution should be considered before his first run back. Punters may well be backing with sentiment but any sort of decent performance certainly bodes well for the future of this lovely animal and there may well be some good value ante-post prices to be had.
